In the midst of a growing humanitarian crisis, various organisations, including Médecins Sans Frontières, Amnesty International, and the Norwegian Refugee Council, have joined forces to call for an end to Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

The appeal comes as the Palestinian health ministry reported a staggering increase in malnutrition-related deaths. According to their reports, 140 six-month-old Zainab Abu Haleeb died of malnutrition on July 26, following 86 such deaths between October 2023 and July 22.

The situation has become so dire that parents and siblings trying to get food for their children are dying while waiting in lines for aid distribution. Aid workers are also at risk, with many facing the threat of being shot due to the Israeli blockade.

On July 27, Pope Leo XIV expressed his concern about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and appealed for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the full respect of humanitarian law. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, made a similar appeal, urging an end to the war in Gaza and for the common good of all people.

The United Kingdom's Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, met with President Donald Trump on July 28 to discuss the situation in Gaza, calling it "appalling". President Trump pledged to "get rid of those lines" blocking food from those who need it most in Gaza.

Israel's government announced a "tactical pause" in fighting in Gaza on the same day. However, two leading human rights organisations based in Israel, B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights, stated that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Their reports detail intentional targeting of Palestinians as a group and systemic destruction of Palestinian society, actions that align with Raphael Lemkin's 1946 genocide definition.

International organisations, such as UNICEF, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the European Parliament, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), Caritas Internationalis, and numerous international NGOs like CARE, Oxfam, and Anera, have also joined the call for an end to the blockade.

The OSV Editorial Board, which includes Father Patrick Briscoe, OP; Gretchen R. Crowe; Paulina Guzik; Matthew Kirby; Peter Jesserer Smith, and Scott P. Richert, emphasised the need for the international community to find a way forward in Gaza that restores life, dignity, and all lost humanity. They called on Catholics to denounce war, work for peace, and uphold the common good for all of God's people.

Some aid has been airdropped in Gaza, and Israel has said other deliveries will be permitted through newly established corridors on the ground. However, with the escalating crisis and the growing calls for action, it remains to be seen whether these measures will be enough to alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza.
