Updated Report: Ginjiro Shigeoka's Health Condition Following Pedro Taduran Match
Japanese boxer Ginjiro Shigeoka, 25, was crowned the world champion after a split decision victory over IBF minimumweight champion Pedro Taduran in their rematch on May 24, 2025, at Intex Arena in Osaka, Japan.
Shigeoka, an official professional boxer in Japan Boxing Commission (JBC), went through a challenging bout with Taduran across the 12-round fight. Despite the grueling contest, Shigeoka secured the win. However, he showed signs of distress in his corner after the final bell and was quickly taken to the hospital.
Subsequent to the match, Shigeoka underwent an emergency craniotomy due to a right subdural hematoma. According to the JBC, boxers who have undergone brain surgery are ineligible to return to the ring.
Currently, Shigeoka is in stable condition while being treated in a hospital in Osaka. He holds a record of 11-2, 9KOs. Meanwhile, Taduran, 28, continues his career with a record of 18-4-1, 13KOs.
Shigeoka has received an outpouring of support from the boxing community as he continues his recovery. Despite the unfortunate turn of events, his career will no longer be limited to professional boxing due to the nature of his injury.
Boxing remains the sports arena where Ginjiro Shigeoka showcased his world champion skills, securing a victory against Pedro Taduran in their rematch. Despite his promising career, Shigeoka's future involvements in this sports will be restricted due to the brain surgery he underwent following their match.
