This is how she reacts to the 'Buffy' reboot cancellation - Hulu axes Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival after fan excitement peaks

Hulu has cancelled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale after filming a pilot episode. The show was meant to continue the original series, following a new generation of Slayers under an older Buffy Summers. Fans had reacted with excitement when the project was first announced in March 2026.

The cancellation comes despite a wave of positive responses online. Over 500,000 social media mentions and 150,000 upvotes appeared within the first 24 hours of the announcement—far more than previous revival attempts received.

The series aimed to bring back the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a fresh cast. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was set to play the new Slayer, while Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy would return as a mentor figure. Director Chloé Zhao and writers Nora and Lila Zuckerman were also attached to the project.

When the cancellation was confirmed, Armstrong shared a video message thanking fans for their support. She expressed gratitude to Gellar, Zhao, and the Zuckerman sisters by name. The young actor also called *Buffy* an important part of many lives, adding that the franchise would endure despite the setback. Gellar, who played Buffy in the original series, later commented on the news. Meanwhile, the initial announcement had sparked far more enthusiasm than past revival efforts. The 2021 reboot pitch by Sarah G. Bullocks drew only 50,000 mentions, with 40% of reactions being negative. Even the 2018 Joss Whedon continuation rumours generated just 80,000 mentions, alongside heated debates among fans.

The cancellation ends Hulu's attempt to revive Buffy the Vampire Slayer for now. Armstrong's message and Gellar's remarks highlight the show's lasting impact. While the pilot won't move forward, the franchise's strong fanbase remains active and engaged.
