Hugh Welchman's 'Cave Of Dreams' to Paint Goya's Dark Masterpieces
Oscar-winning filmmaker Hugh Welchman is assembling a team of Spanish artists to create a new 'painted-animation' movie, 'Cave Of Dreams'. The movie will focus on the darker works of Spanish artist Francisco Goya and is expected to be as ambitious as Welchman's previous project, 'Loving Vincent', which required 120 oil painters to bring Van Gogh's story to life.
Welchman, who spoke about the project at Iberseries in Madrid, revealed that 'Cave Of Dreams' will centre around Goya's 'The Black Paintings' series, created after the artist lost his hearing at age 46. The movie will be made by Breakthru Films, the same production company behind 'Loving Vincent'. Dorota Kobiela, who co-directed 'Loving Vincent', will also be involved in the new movie. The Polish Film Institute is backing the project, as it did for 'Loving Vincent'. The movie will have at least eight co-producers, with four based in Spain and four international, although the identities of the four additional co-producers in Spain are not yet known.
'Cave Of Dreams' promises to be a unique and ambitious exploration of Goya's later, darker works. With Welchman and Kobiela at the helm and the backing of the Polish Film Institute, the movie is set to be a significant addition to the world of painted-animation.
