Hugh Jackman's attempt at securing the role in Miss Congeniality fails to impress the panel
In a recent interview with Variety, A-list actor Hugh Jackman opened up about his audition for the 2000 romantic comedy Miss Congeniality. The film, which is currently streaming on Paramount+, starred Sandra Bullock in the lead role and Benjamin Bratt as hunky leading man Eric Matthew.
Despite Jackman's best efforts, he did not secure the role of FBI Agent Eric Matthews in Miss Congeniality. The part ultimately went to Bratt, who had great chemistry with Bullock on screen. This missed opportunity marked a significant turning point in Jackman's career, as the same year saw the release of X-Men, a film that catapulted him into superstardom.
Before the release of X-Men, Jackman was relatively unknown in Hollywood. However, his roles in subsequent projects like The Prestige and his Oscar-nominated performance in Les Miserables solidified his position as a leading man in the industry.
Sadly, Jackman and Bullock have not appeared together in any released movies. Regarding upcoming projects, there are no announced movies or projects involving both actors together. Sandra Bullock is returning to her role in Practical Magic 2, reprising the character Sally Owens, alongside Nicole Kidman. This project is directed by Susanne Bier but does not involve Hugh Jackman.
On the other hand, Jackman has projects coming up on the 2026 movie release list and beyond. Both actors continue to have thriving careers, but it seems their paths have not crossed professionally since the audition for Miss Congeniality.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Jackman mentioned that losing the role to Miss Congeniality was a bummer for him. However, he also acknowledged that the experience was a learning one, shaping him into the successful actor he is today.
