"Tretertruppe": HSV complains about opponents and referee - HSV slams referee after controversial 1-1 draw with Mainz 05
Hamburger SV (HSV) have expressed frustration after a 1-1 draw with FSV Mainz 05, claiming the referee allowed excessive fouling to go unpunished. Head coach Merlin Polzin argued that key decisions—including potential red cards—went against his side in the tightly contested match.
The controversy centred on two Mainz players, Silas and Dominik Kohr, who committed fouls that could have earned them second yellow cards. Both were substituted shortly after, avoiding dismissal. HSV midfielder Miro Muheim criticised the referee, Robin Braun, insisting the challenges warranted red cards.
Mainz boss Urs Fischer acknowledged his team's luck in keeping all 11 players on the pitch. He also praised his tactical substitutions, which helped prevent further fouls. Meanwhile, the VAR could not intervene due to current rules, though discussions are underway to allow reviews of second-yellow incidents in the future.
Polzin later stated that one or two decisions should have favoured HSV, adding to the club's sense of injustice after the match.
The draw leaves HSV dissatisfied with the officiating, while Mainz escape without further disciplinary action. A possible rule change could soon give referees more support in similar situations. For now, both teams move forward with a point apiece.
