HSV's Dinosaur Days Persist in the 2nd Division

Once a dominant force in the Bundesliga with a 54-year consecutive streak, HSV found themselves relegated in 2018 and transformed into a second-division dinosaur. The cherished Volksparkstadion clock, a symbol of their tenure in the top league, was dismantled by former head coach Bernd Hoffmann following the club's failure to secure direct promotion in their first season in the 2nd division.

Since their relegation, HSV has repeatedly missed out on promotions, with Hannes Wolf, Dieter Hecking, Daniel Thioune, and Tim Walter leading the team as head coaches. In four consecutive seasons, they came agonizingly close, finishing fourth three times and second twice, but falling short in the relegation playoffs.

Their recent campaigns have left them at a familiar milestone, surrounded by promotion rivals FC St. Pauli and Holstein Kiel, who have been in the 2nd division for five and six years, respectively. With the former consistently challenging for the top spot, HSV faces a tough road to dispelling their dinosaur label.

In the grand scheme of the Bundesliga, HSV finds itself slipping down the all-time table. With 2733 points in 183 games, they are now sixth, surpassed by Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Bremen, Stuttgart, and Mönchengladbach. Despite this setback, HSV now holds the 59th position in the eternal table of the 2nd division, above Rot-Weiß Ahlen and Chemnitzer FC.
