Bundesliga football club Hamburger SV has resolved its issue with sports doctors revolving around team doctor Götz Welsch. A meeting between sporting director Stefan Kuntz and the responsible parties of the Athleticum at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) culminated in a plan to augment their collaboration.

The newly developed Athleticum, a high-end, 15 million euro sports medical clinic on the HSV training premises at Volkspark, is set to open in the autumn, led by Welsch.

"We engaged in a factual, constructive discussion leading to an agreement," Kuntz was reported in the HSV declaration. Team doctor Welsch commented: "The understanding between us has improved, as we clarified the needs and expectations of both parties." The key point is "that we move forward into the next season and the shared future with solid trust and mutual understanding."

Soumahoro controversy

According to the "Hamburger Abendblatt," the discord was due to French defender Aboubaka Soumahoro. The defender prospect arrived at HSV in February and was considered an immediate reinforcement in the promotion quest. During the initial training session, the 20-year-old allegedly suffered a minor thigh injury. It turned out to be a tendon tear.

Upon examination, it was discovered that he had a prior injury. Soumahoro missed several months but is reported fit for the upcoming season.

Kuntz was reportedly frustrated with the HSV doctors due to the missed injury during the mandatory medical examination prior to the contract's signing. The doctors, however, denied these accusations. Apparently, the collaboration with the UKE was questioned by HSV.

Now, a shift in stance

Recent events have resulted in a change of stance. The cooperation will not only involve HSV but will also expand to include the Bundesliga women's footballers of HSV. "We aim to utilize synergies and provide top-notch sports medical care for the women. The interconnectivity will intensify as time progresses," said Kuntz.

Welsch spoke about the opening of the Athleticum, stating, "Ultimately, the sought-after location at Volkspark was essential: We aspire to move even closer together, further cementing, and expanding our partnership."
