HS Girls Flag Football Debut: Four Schools from BIIF Join Inaugural State Championship Tournament
Let's Talk Football: Big Island Squads Battle it Out in Inaugural State Championships!
Four fierce Big Island squads - Konawaena, Hawaii Prep, Waiakea, and Hilo - made their mark in the first-ever Hawaii Dental Service Girls Flag Football State Championships this week on Oahu.
The tournament, filled with unforgettable performances, saw all teams giving it their all. However, each team stumbled in the opening round, ultimately finding themselves in the consolation bracket.
Konawaena, who emerged triumphant in the BIIF Division I championship after an undefeated season, faced a tough challenge against Nanakuli. Despite a spirited effort, the Lady Wildcats, led by quarterback Ki'ilei Leileiwi, couldn't match the dominance of Nanakuli. Ki'ilei tossed three touchdowns and three interceptions, while Nanakuli's quarterback Charyssa Asisin passed for an impressive 205 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.
Hawaii Prep, boasting the BIIF DII title, faced Leilehua in the opening round. Madie Buczyna scored the initial touchdown for Ka Makani, but the red and white managed only one more score for the matchup. As the game progressed, Lady Mules quarterback Cali Moniz-Kealoha found her rhythm, throwing two touchdowns to Maci Rivera and Madi Powell.
Hilo, who placed fourth, was outclassed by Kamehameha-Maui, ending the tournament without a single point. KSM quarterback Tyra Shimizu delivered three touchdown passes, while Kawena Cabanting caught the last two scores of the game.
Waiakea, the other Big Island team, fell to KS-Kapalama in the first round. The Warriors, who managed only 162 yards of offense compared to KSK's 307, could only muster a single touchdown, scored by quarterback Kaya Texeira.
Though the journey didn't end as they hoped, these teams have set a high bar for the future of Big Island flag football.
