Classic FM listeners and audience have spoken, voting Howard Shore's 'Lord of the Rings' score as the nation's favourite film music in the 2023 Movie Music Hall of Fame. The countdown, featuring Alan Menken's 'The Little Mermaid' at No.100, ended with Jonathan Ross unveiling the new champion.

Shore's epic score, with over 80 themes and motifs, has captivated audiences worldwide since its debut in 2001. It has since grown a loyal fanbase, spanning three films and the recent TV series 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power'.

The countdown also saw several notable entries. Germaine Franco made her debut at No.59 with her soundtrack to Disney's 'Encanto'. Debbie Wiseman, Classic FM's composer in residence, reached No.6 with her score to 'Wilde'. John Williams maintained his title as the most popular film composer, with five entries in the Top 20, including 'Indiana Jones', 'Star Wars', 'Jurassic Park', and 'Harry Potter'. Hans Zimmer's 'Gladiator' reached No.5, while his soundtracks for 'Interstellar' and 'The Lion King' also made the Top 25. Hildur Guðnadóttir's 'Joker' score held strong at No.83.

Howard Shore's 'Lord of the Rings' score has been crowned the nation's favourite, beating tough competition from John Williams' 'Schindler's List', which previously topped the chart in 2020. The Hall of Fame continues to reflect the diverse tastes of Classic FM listeners, celebrating both established and emerging film composers.
