Sönke Möhring: I was a classic career changer - How Sönke Möhring turned rejections into a thriving acting career
Actor Sönke Möhring has built a career in film and television despite early setbacks. Known for roles in Inglourious Basterds and SOKO Wismar, he describes himself as a 'career changer' who found success through persistence. His journey into acting was far from straightforward—rejected by drama schools, he carved his own path in the industry.
Möhring initially trained as a childcare worker before studying philosophy and psychology. He later decided against a career advice in psychology, believing many psychologists end up needing therapy themselves. Instead, he turned to acting but faced immediate hurdles: drama schools turned him away because he was over the typical age limit of 25.
Undeterred, Möhring pursued acting through sheer determination. His breakthrough came with Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009), where he played Sgt. Wilhelm Wicki. This led to a long-running role as detective Horst Mittelstedt in the German crime series SOKO Wismar, which has aired since 2004. Other notable projects include Good Bye, Lenin!, Anatomy, Luther (2019–2020), and Babylon Berlin (2017–present).
Despite his success, Möhring admits he once sought validation through acting. He also cautions aspiring performers that wealth is unlikely in the profession. His brother, Wotan Wilke Möhring, is another well-known actor, though Sönke has made his own mark in the industry.
Möhring's career demonstrates how persistence can overcome early rejections. From childcare work to starring in major films and TV series, his path was unconventional. Today, he remains a familiar face in German and international productions, proving that success in acting doesn't always follow the usual route.
