How ranch dressing became America's unstoppable food obsession
Ranch dressing remains a firm favourite across the US, with three-quarters of Americans admitting they like or love it. A 2024 survey even revealed that 44 percent use it weekly, making it the most popular dressing appearing on more restaurant menus each year. Its dominance stretches back decades, holding the top spot in sales since 1992.
The dressing's story began in 1954, when Steve Henson first created it at his California ranch. By 1972, the Clorox Company had acquired the recipe, turning it into a household name. Over time, its popularity exploded, especially in fast food—like Taco Bell's 2015 ranch-coated nachos and pizza.
Ranch has since spread far beyond salads. Restaurants now serve ranch-drizzled burgers, chicken wings, and even fusion dishes like Korean BBQ tacos with a ranch twist. Chains such as Chili's and Applebee's have embraced these creations, with demand still climbing after 15 years of growth.
The pandemic further boosted condiment sales, and ranch dressing has kept its momentum. It has grown its market share in 26 of the last 29 quarters. Google Trends data also shows a sharp rise in online searches starting in 2011, with no signs of slowing.
Even among younger generations, ranch holds strong appeal. While 21 percent of Gen Z food creators call it overrated, 43 percent want more ranch variations on menus. A striking 92 percent would visit a restaurant just for new ranch options. Its influence even crosses borders—Cool Ranch Doritos are sold as 'Cool American' in Europe, and some countries simply label it 'American flavour'.
The trend shows no signs of fading. At Great Wolf Lodge, a ranch dressing milkshake is currently on offer at all 22 resorts until May. On March 10, it was priced at $3.10, proving that ranch's versatility knows no bounds.
Ranch dressing continues to shape menus and consumer habits, from fast food to fine dining. Its steady growth, even after decades of dominance, confirms its place as a staple in American food culture. With new variations still emerging, its influence looks set to last.
