Goddess and Internet Star - Why Do Cats Fascinate Us So? - How Cats Conquered Human Culture—From Ancient Gods to Internet Stars

A new exhibition in Hamburg is exploring the long and varied history of cats in human culture. Titled Cats!, the show traces how these animals have shaped media, religion and even the internet. From ancient worship to viral fame, the display reveals why felines remain so fascinating.

The exhibition at the Museum am Rothenbaum (MARKK) runs from November 19, 2021, until November 29, 2026. Curated by Lara Selin Ertener, it examines how cats have been both adored and feared across centuries. In ancient civilizations like Egypt and Hinduism, they were revered as divine. Yet in early modern Europe, they were linked to witches and demonised.

Cats! remains open for five years, giving visitors time to explore the animal’s cultural impact. The display highlights how felines have influenced art, technology and belief systems. Their enduring appeal, from ancient times to today’s digital world, is undeniable.
