Title: From "Aesthetic Disaster" to Culinary Masterpiece: The Journey of the Mobile Kitchen Train

Taiwan's new addition to the "Future" special excursion train series is the mobile kitchen, which has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally debuted in 2019 as an "aesthetic disaster," the train models gained national notoriety for their unsightly appearance. But all that changed when an open letter sparked a new vision for Taiwan's railways.

The Orange Uproar

Johnny Chiu, an architect in Taipei, expressed his concerns when the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) introduced the first photo of the "Future" train. The design, featuring unappealing white plastic workstations and garish flower decorations, created a less-than-delightful impression.

In response to the public's criticism, TRA acknowledged that they knew how to manage infrastructure and repairs, but lacked the knowledge to improve the visual appeal of their trains. To address this issue, TRA created a creative team focused on finding a more aesthetically pleasing solution, who happened to stumble upon Johnny Chiu's letter of encouragement.

Bringing the Past into the Future

The TRA team reached out to Johnny Chiu, and he quickly jumped at the opportunity. Given seven months to complete the transformation, Johnny and his team set out on a challenging yet exciting renovation project. The orange-colored Chu Guang Express trains had aged and were in dire need of an overhaul.

Limited resources and tight deadlines made the renovation a daunting task. However, Johnny and his team rose to the occasion by cleverly hiding electrical wiring and upholding strict safety standards, resulting in a sleek and modern design that blended the train's historical heritage with a modern twist.

Johnny was well-versed in the delicate balance between preserving history and modernizing it, as demonstrated in his design for the mobile kitchen and entire train car. During restoration, both the train and its new dining car underwent significant changes, effectively transforming the "disaster" into a prized asset.

The Resounding Success

The renewed "Future" train received widespread acclaim and recognition, including the Japan Transportation Design Good Design Award in 2020. Nowadays, passengers praise the train as an exciting culinary adventure, rather than merely an aesthetically challenged train.

The Train of The Future: Upgrading to a Five-Star Gourmet Experience

The revamped train, now known as the "mobile kitchen," offers travelers a unique, exclusive experience. With a limited capacity of 54 passengers, the renovated car features a luxurious interior inspired by Taiwan's natural landscapes.

To overcome the challenges of limited resources and infrastructure, TRA sourced supplies from trusted partners like the Silks Hotel Group and organized catering from Jingying Hotel Group, ensuring the kitchen had all the essential equipment necessary to whip up world-class dishes.

The menu showcases Taiwan's rich culinary heritage, handpicked by a team of experienced chefs, who carefully plan each course to match the ever-changing views outside the train's windows. Journey highlights include tasting abalone in Hualien and savoring local onsen cuisine.

In-Car Dining: A Culinary Journey in Motion

The entire car design emphasizes a cohesive dining experience. Tables, chairs, and armrests are selected for comfort, with additional details like adjustable lighting and phone holders, ensuring a convenient yet elegant on-board experience.

Johnny Chiu's attention to detail didn't stop at furniture design. Each car showcases beautiful, thoughtfully-designed corner accents that echo Taiwan's culture, history, and nature.

The Future is Now: Experiencing the Mobile Kitchen Train

The mobile kitchen's idea was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, and tickets for the two-day journey quickly sold out for several months. To cater to the high demand for the gourmet experience, TRA is developing "Future 2.0" by expanding the mobile kitchen fleet.

For those eager to taste Taiwan's most delicious dishes, the mobile kitchen prides itself on more than just exquisite food – it offers passengers a chance to explore Taiwan's breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, all while enjoying a never-before-seen culinary journey.

Embark on the Mobile Kitchen Train and experience a blend of exquisite flavors, enchanting vistas, and sightseeing like never before.
