Houston braces for arctic blast with emergency preparations underway
An arctic blast is set to hit Houston this weekend, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. Authorities are already taking steps to prepare roads, bridges, and essential services for the severe weather ahead.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will start treating roadways on Thursday evening. Their focus is on keeping routes safe for first responders and critical travel during the storm.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Leslie Briones is overseeing preparations for the area’s 246 bridges. The precinct is also working with law enforcement and emergency medical services to ensure a coordinated response. Warming centres will be activated if needed to protect residents from the cold. Meanwhile, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) expects to have enough power generation to meet demand. The grid operator will monitor conditions closely and use all available resources to maintain reliability. Coordination with the Public Utility Commission, power generators, and transmission companies will continue throughout the event.
Road treatments will begin ahead of the storm’s arrival, while emergency services remain on standby. ERCOT’s preparations aim to prevent disruptions to the power supply as temperatures plummet. Residents are advised to stay informed as conditions develop over the weekend.
