House Committee Approves Bill to Rename Kennedy Center Opera House After Melania Trump
The House Appropriations Committee has approved a bill that includes a controversial proposal to rename the Kennedy Center's opera house after Melania Trump. Meanwhile, several Republican lawmakers have put forward bills honouring former President Trump in various ways.
The committee voted 33-25 in favour of Rep. Mike Simpson's (R-Idaho) amendment to rename the opera house in Melania Trump's honour. The venue, one of three major performing spaces at the Kennedy Center, seats 2,347 patrons. This move comes as part of the government funding bill, which still needs to clear the full House and the Senate.
In separate developments, several Republican representatives have introduced bills to commemorate former President Trump. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) proposed putting Trump's and Biden's faces on the $100 bill, while Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) suggested adding Trump's face to Mount Rushmore. Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) even introduced legislation to make Trump's birthday a national holiday. These proposals follow Trump's previous declaration of himself as the chairman of the Kennedy Center and his retooling of its Board of Trustees. Some Republicans have also called for Trump to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his foreign policy achievements.
The renaming of the Kennedy Center's opera house after Melania Trump faces further hurdles in Congress. Meanwhile, several proposals to honour former President Trump continue to spark debate among lawmakers and the public.
