Hotel fire, gas blast, and crash disrupt southern Germany in 24 hours

A series of unrelated incidents across southern Germany caused disruptions over the past day. In Leinfelden-Echterdingen, a hotel fire forced the evacuation of 240 guests, while a gas explosion in Reutlingen injured an elderly resident. Meanwhile, a red-light collision in Metzingen left one person with minor injuries and caused significant property damage.

The first incident occurred in a hotel lobby on Flughafenstraße in Leinfelden-Echterdingen. An Advent wreath caught fire after a candle ignited it, setting off the fire alarm. The blaze started when the protective glass around the candle shattered from excessive heat. Guests were quickly evacuated, and firefighters arrived to assess the scene. No further firefighting was needed, allowing everyone to return to their rooms safely.

In Reutlingen, a gas stove ignition in a second-floor kitchen triggered a flash explosion. The blast set a propane tank on fire, causing minor burns to an 80-year-old resident. Despite his injuries, the man managed to shut off the gas valve, preventing the flames from spreading. Preliminary investigations suggest a leaky hose on the gas cylinder was to blame. Paramedics took him to a hospital for treatment. A separate crash took place at the intersection of Ulmer Straße and Auchtertstraße in Metzingen. A driver ran a red light, colliding with another vehicle. The impact left a 44-year-old passenger with minor injuries, treated at the scene by paramedics. The BMW involved was severely damaged and had to be towed, with total property damage estimated at €45,000.

All three incidents resulted in minor injuries but no life-threatening harm. The hotel guests in Leinfelden-Echterdingen returned to their rooms after the fire was contained. The elderly man in Reutlingen received hospital treatment, while the Metzingen crash caused no serious injuries but left one car undriveable. Authorities continue to investigate the causes of each event.
