Hefty Downpours and Hailstorms on Sunday: Germany's Weather Woes Continue
Western Regions Brace for Stormy Weather on Both Saturday and Sunday - Hot Weather Persists in the Western Regions, Including This Weekend
Get ready for another round of unsettled weather this Sunday! After the scorching heat took over Europe on Saturday, heavy thunderstorms are on the horizon, causing concern for residents in Germany.
While the afternoon of Saturday saw a series of isolated thunderstorms from the Eifel region to the Cologne Bight and along the Lower Rhine, the stormy weather does not seem to be going anywhere soon. A representative from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach stated that German Lower Saxony could face the brunt of the thunderstorms later in the evening.
Yet, the exact duration of these thunderstorms remains unpredictable. "Only time will tell whether the day's progress will put an end to the thunderstorms or if they'll persist throughout the evening," according to the DWD representative. There's even a chance of lightning holding out until the small hours of the night.
On Saturday, the DWD had issued alerts for large hailstones, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. This is a real cause for concern, as such weather conditions can bring about significant threats. Meteorologists state that hail accumulations, heavy rainfall (up to 40 liters per square meter in no time), and gusty winds, reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, are the main culprits.
Temperatures are expected to peak at 28 to 35 degrees in most places, with only the north and northeast experiencing milder temperatures of 22 to 27 degrees. Later in the night from Saturday to Sunday, there will be a higher likelihood of thunderstorms lurking in the western half. We could see a surge in heavy rainfall, up to over 25 liters per square meter in a short time or more than 40 liters per square meter in a few hours. There may also be incidences of hail and winds of 100 kilometers per hour. Temperatures will plummet to around 19 to 15 degrees in the countryside, 21 degrees in the cities, and 13 degrees in the east and southeast.
Severe thunderstorms might still be a threat on Sunday, particularly in the eastern and southern regions, with parts of the central regions being affected as well. The DWD is cautioning residents about heavy rainfall, with accumulations of over 40 millimeters in a short time and more than 50 liters per square meter in a few hours. There's also the risk of large hail and powerful gusts reaching 100 kilometers per hour. Temperatures are predicted to soar to a sweltering 27 to 33 degrees in the southeastern half, while it will be somewhat cooler elsewhere, around 20 to 27 degrees.
Monday will hopefully bring some respite, as the weather calms down a bit. To start, Monday's sky will be overcast, but sunny spells are expected to sweep across the west later on. The highest temperatures will peak at 20 to 26 degrees. Let's just hope that Mother Nature decides to take a break!

The Commission, in its capacity for environmental-science consultations, may need to weigh in on the potential impacts of the severe weather events, such as heavy rainfall and hailstorms, currently affecting Southwestern Germany, given the risks related to exposure to extreme weather conditions. As the science of weather and climate continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly important to understand and address the changing patterns of weather events like the current thunderstorms along the Lower Rhine and Cologne Bight, or the potential future ones in the Eifel region.
