Hot season persists with no sign of abating

The sweltering heatwave that has gripped Germany is set to peak on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, with temperatures soaring to potentially 38°C across the country. However, the hottest spots may not quite reach the 40°C mark, according to meteorological forecasts.

From Wednesday, Germany is expected to experience temperatures of up to 38°C, with thunderstorms also predicted. The Rhine-Main-Neckar region, Moselle, Saar, and Lower Franconia are expected to be the hottest regions. Coastal regions will remain cooler at 25°C due to onshore winds.

On Monday, a few loose or thin cloud fields will move through the coasts and the northeast, with some fog possible in the early morning. The wind will mostly blow from the south to southeast, with some areas along the Baltic Sea experiencing easterly winds. Monday night will be mostly clear and dry, with temperatures dropping to 15-17°C in metropolitan areas and 9-14°C in the North German lowlands.

In contrast, Leipzig and its surrounding eastern areas are predicted to be the warmest on Wednesday, reaching up to 27°C with sunny weather and low rain chances. Southern regions like Munich will be cooler and rainier, with temperatures around 21°C and cloudy skies. Other regions like Ahlhorn show stable temperatures around 19°C for the weekend following Wednesday, indicating moderate warmth across northern areas.

| Region | Expected Max Temp (°C) | Weather Conditions | |-------------|------------------------|-------------------------| | Leipzig | 27 | Sunny, low rain chance | | Munich | 21 | Cloudy, 70% rain chance | | Ahlhorn | ~19 | Moderate temperatures |

The heatwave is not confined to Germany, as it continues in Italy, France, Greece, and Spain, with wildfires and heat warnings. The high "Julia" is expected to move over Pomerania towards Lithuania on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing heat to Germany in a somewhat weakened form.

As the week progresses, cooler air is on its way, offering some respite from the heatwave. Tuesday night offers a chance to air out homes before the heatwave, and temperatures may drop slightly over the weekend, although it will remain summery to very summery warm. Occasional showers and thunderstorms are possible on Friday and throughout the weekend.

In contrast to some regions, Leipzig and its surrounding eastern areas are predicted to be the warmest on Wednesday, reaching up to 27°C with sunny weather and low rain chances. The European Union, particularly Germany, is expected to experience temperatures of up to 38°C from Wednesday, with thunderstorms also predicted according to weather-forecasting.
