Sunbathing Snafu: Valerie Singleton's Hot Air Balloon Fiasco

Back in the 60s, Valerie Singleton, a renowned name in the kids' TV world, found herself in an embarrassing predicament. This charming broadcaster, famous for her stint on the longest-running children's TV show, Blue Peter, accidentally exposed a little more than intended while sunbathing on her balcony.

Valerie, 88, joined the Blue Peter family back in 1962 and graced our screens for a memorable decade before bidding adieu in 1972. Known for her vivacious nature, she's no stranger to revealing anecdotes.

This time around, she shared a talespoonful of mortification about an unplanned revelation, caught by a hot air balloon passing overhead.

In a heart-warming radio chat with BBC Radio Solent, Valerie spoke about her quaint home in Dorset, where she'd cleverly arranged her plants to ensure a private sunbathing spot, shielded from her neighbors' prying eyes. However, her trickery worked only to a certain altitude.

Valerie recounted, "I was relishing the sun on my skin, minding my own business, when suddenly, not too far off, I spotted a hot air balloon. In my excitement, I leapt up to wave at the passengers, momentarily forgetting my attire."

Unfortunately for Valerie, she didn't manage to snatch her towel fast enough, leaving the hot air balloon passengers with quite the eyeful. She laughed, "I was a hair's breadth slow, and they, being quite far off, must have had powerful binoculars."

Post her tenure on Blue Peter, Valerie moved on to host various shows, like Nationwide, The Money Programme, and BBC Radio 4's PM. Last March, she penned feelings about her time on Blue Peter in The Mail on Sunday, emphasizing its significant impact on children.

Valerie wrote, "Time and again, people tell me they found inspiration in Blue Peter to pursue careers ranging from designing hats to becoming engineers. That's the enduring effect of the show."

She concluded, "Though I left Blue Peter in 1972, I remain a proud member of the Blue Peter family. I've made lasting friendships with several presenters who came after me, from Mark Curry and Tim Vincent to Janet Ellis, Diane Louise Jordan, and Anthea Turner.

"I continued watching Blue Peter until 2012, when they decided to shuffle it to their dedicated children's channel, CBeebies."

During her Blue Peter stint, Valerie teamed up with Christopher Trace, John Noakes, Peter Purves, and Lesley Judd.

In 2008, Valerie made headlines when she confessed to an affair with Peter Purves, which happened while they were both on the show. She spoke about their brief, passionate fling, stressing that it was more akin to a friendship than anything else.

Peter, now 86, shared more about the encounter in a recent interview with The Telegraph, stating, "It was just one night. There was never any sexual tension onscreen. We've remained friends, though we did quarrel frequently. Val could be quite demanding, expecting others to cater to her every whim."
