Hostilities persisted beyond the agreed midnight truce, claims Second Army Region
Despite a ceasefire agreement, allegations of ceasefire violations have been a recurring issue along the Thai-Cambodian border. Cambodia has accused Thai forces of hostile actions, including threats of air strikes and breach of evacuation orders, which Thailand denies [1].
Thailand, on the other hand, has presented evidence of Cambodian violations, verified by ASEAN observers. These violations include interference with border fencing and mine clearance operations [2]. The Thai military has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the ceasefire and complying with international humanitarian law, while emphasizing it will not tolerate threats to its territorial integrity or its citizens' safety [2].
Incidents of ceasefire violations have resulted in civilian damage. For instance, artillery shells landed in several areas, causing property damage in Ban Skor, Moo 12, Bak Dai subdistrict, Surin; Ban Thai Niyom, Moo 17, Bak Dai subdistrict, Surin; Ban Nong Ta Loeb, Moo 14, Bak Dai subdistrict, Surin; Ban Nong Joop, Moo 2, Ta Miang subdistrict, Surin; Ban Phum Srol Mai, Moo 12, Sao Thong Chai subdistrict, Si Sa Ket; Ban Phum Srol, Moo 2, Sao Thong Chai subdistrict, Si Sa Ket; and Ban Sao Thong Chai, Moo 1, Sao Thong Chai subdistrict, Si Sa Ket [4].
The Thai Army has been cooperating with international observers from ASEAN, allowing inspections along key border areas such as Chong Ahn Ma in Ubon Ratchathani Province, and providing detailed briefings on Cambodia's ceasefire violations and obstructions to Thai mine clearance operations [2].
In an effort to ensure the safety of civilians, the Second Army Region has requested evacuees to remain where they are until the security situation is reassessed. The Second Army Region continues to support provincial authorities in relocating civilians from danger zones to designated evacuation centres in four provinces. A total of 137,998 people have been relocated, an increase of 18,926 from the previous update [5].
2,831 volunteers, including Royal Volunteer 904 officers, civilian volunteers, and military cadets, have been deployed across these four provinces [5]. The US Ambassador to Malaysia has also urged Thailand and Cambodia to uphold the ceasefire.
In addition, unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles have been detected flying above Thai military installations and airfields along the border. Troop movements and vehicles were detected in the Chong Ta Thao area, while gunfire with small arms took place at No Name Hill in the Chong Bok sector [6].
Clashes with support weapons occurred between 5am and 9am at Chong An Ma, and Cambodian troops launched indirect fire attacks at 1am in Phu Makua [6]. The Second Army Region's Operations Centre issued a situation update on these armed clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border.
Both sides have maintained troop deployments in the Ta Kwai and Ta Muen temples, and there was a confrontation in the Sam Tae area, but Thai forces held their position [6]. Cambodia has appealed to the UN and ASEAN over these incidents, highlighting significant civilian impacts amid escalating border conflict [3].
Thailand, however, stresses a strategy aimed at de-escalation and preventing larger conflict outbreaks, though skirmishes continue intermittently [1]. Despite these challenges, both countries continue to work towards maintaining peace and upholding the ceasefire agreement.
