Hostilities in Ukraine: Russian offensive on Kiev results in the deaths of at least six individuals

On the morning of July 31, 2025, Russian forces launched a devastating missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The assault, involving over 300 drones and eight missiles, targeted multiple locations across the city, particularly in the Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

The attacks caused extensive damage, with over 100 buildings in the Solomianskyi district being affected, including residential blocks, schools, and hospitals. A nine-story building partially collapsed, trapping people under rubble.

The casualty reports are grim. At least 10 people were killed, including a 6-year-old child, with some reports indicating up to 16 fatalities. Injuries are reported to exceed 120 people, with numbers such as 52 and 159 also mentioned in different accounts. At least nine children were among those injured, the highest number recorded in Kyiv since the war escalation.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with emergency services actively searching for survivors beneath the rubble and treating the wounded. Two survivors have already been extracted from the rubble of a residential building.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as a brutal strike directly targeting civilians and residential infrastructure. Kyiv declared August 1 a Day of Mourning, with flags at half-mast and a ban on entertainment events to honor the victims.

The attack came shortly after US political statements threatening new tariffs on Russia unless it halted its war. Ukrainian officials and lawmakers characterized the strikes as deliberate war crimes focused on civilian targets, calling for greater international pressure on Russia to enforce peace negotiations.

In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha called for "maximum pressure on Moscow" and suggested synchronizing all sanctions measures against Russia. President Trump has been attempting to find a solution regarding the conflict with Putin, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.

The Ukrainian military is facing the modernization of the Russian arsenal, as their drones can fly at 250km/h and 3 km high. On Wednesday, the Ukrainian military headquarters reported 1,292 explosive drone attacks and 50 Russian airstrikes.

This attack marks one of the deadliest and most destructive since the conflict escalation, causing significant civilian casualties, widespread infrastructural damage, and eliciting strong condemnation and calls for intensified international support and sanctions against Russia.

The European Union strongly condemned the Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, viewing it as a breach of international law and a serious escalation of the war-and-conflicts in Ukraine. In a general news statement, the EU called for immediate action in the form of politics and crime-and-justice measures, urging member states to impose harsher sanctions on Russia and intensify efforts to enforce peace negotiations. The EU also expressed sympathy towards the victims of the attack, offering aid in rescue operations and rebuilding affected areas.
