Hostile incursion leads to fatalities of two Israelis at Jordanian border

In a shocking turn of events, a deadly attack occurred at the border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, controlled by Israel. The suspected attacker, a Jordanian civilian who had been working as a driver of aid convoys for three months, used multiple weapons, including a firearm and a knife.

Two Israeli soldiers, aged 20 and 68, lost their lives in the attack. Israeli President Izchak Herzog expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. The attacker was neutralized by security forces, which typically means he was killed.

Jordanian authorities swiftly condemned the incident and launched investigations. They view the attack as a violation of law and a threat to the kingdom's interests. The Israeli army suspects that the attacker arrived in a truck carrying humanitarian aid intended for the Gaza Strip. In response, the Israeli chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, advised temporarily halting humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via land from Jordan until the investigation is completed and improved control procedures are implemented.

The Jordanian authorities have temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border. This incident is not the first time such an unfortunate event has occurred. Last year, a Jordanian carried out an attack at the same border crossing, killing three Israeli employees. The Jordanian national was subsequently killed by security forces.

Hamas' military wing, the Kassam Brigades, has claimed responsibility for the attack, posting a message on Telegram showing a burning Israeli tank and a red triangle, a symbol used by Hamas to mark enemy targets. However, Israel's foreign ministry condemns the attack, attributing it to Hamas' disinformation campaign and abhorrent incitement in Jordan.

It's important to note that many Palestinians reside in Jordan, with estimates suggesting that 30 to 40 percent of Jordanians have Palestinian roots. Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1994. Despite this incident, aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes.

This unfortunate event underscores the complexities of the ongoing conflict in the region and the need for continued dialogue and cooperation to ensure peace and security for all parties involved.
