Hostile Incident: Israeli Duo Loses Lives in Ambush Along Jordanian Border
In a shocking incident, a Jordanian driver of a Gaza aid truck attacked Israeli soldiers at the Allenby Bridge border crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-controlled West Bank, resulting in the death of two Israelis.
Initial reports suggest that the suspected attacker opened fire with a firearm at the border crossing. However, later reports indicate that his weapon malfunctioned, causing him to stab two men instead. The victims were identified as a 20-year-old and a 60-year-old.
The Israeli army reported that security forces 'neutralized' the suspected attacker, which usually means the attacker was killed. The Israeli military has not confirmed if this report is accurate.
The Jordanian government spokesman, Mohamed Al-Momani, stated that authorities are investigating the 'security incident.' Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but tensions have occasionally flared up since then.
The attack has affected the delivery of humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, with the Israeli broadcaster Kan reporting that the incident would cause the border crossing to remain closed for an extended period. The Jordanian state news agency Petra reported that the Allenby Bridge border crossing has temporarily suspended person traffic.
The military wing of the Islamic terrorist organization Hamas praised the attack and expressed solidarity with Jordan. The Kassam Brigades, a part of Hamas, issued a statement on Telegram in support of the attack, showing a burning Israeli tank and a red triangle, which Hamas uses to mark enemy targets.
Last year, an attack at the same border crossing resulted in the death of three Israeli employees. According to Israeli army reports, a Jordanian truck driver opened fire on Israeli security forces. The Jordanian national was then killed by security forces.
It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians have Palestinian roots. This incident has sparked concerns about the potential escalation of tensions between Jordan and Israel.
Israeli President Izchak Herzog expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. The Jordanian government has not yet made a public statement regarding the condolences.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict in the region and the potential for violence to erupt at any moment. Both countries are urged to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing issues.
