Hostile forces launch assault on detention center in Zaporozhye, resulting in 17 fatalities and 42 injuries.
In the early hours of July 29, 2025, a Russian airstrike targeted the Bilneisk correctional colony in the Zaporizhzhia region, leaving 16 inmates dead and 43 others injured.
The attack, which occurred at 23:28 on July 28, used four guided glide bombs (KABs), according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice. The strike also damaged nearby private homes, but the colony's perimeter remains intact.
Ukrainian Justice Minister Herman Halushchenko, who visited the site, confirmed the strike was a deliberate act of terror targeting the penitentiary. The inmates were evacuated immediately after the attack, but due to the nature of the strike, they could not be moved to the prison's bomb shelters in time.
Medical aid has been provided to all affected inmates following the attack. Approximately 50 employees of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine have been deployed to maintain order within the Bilneisk correctional colony.
In the aftermath of the attack, Ukrainian authorities are examining the circumstances to understand how the strike was carried out and are appealing for an international response to this terrorist act.
This information comes directly from the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice and statements by Justice Minister Halushchenko. The Bilneisk correctional colony currently houses the affected inmates under medical supervision in the medical unit, on-duty subdivision, and other departments of the facility. No threat of escape has been reported.
