Diplomatic Push for Hostage Return: Wadephul Emphasizes Gaza Stability as Top Priority
Hostage release takes top priority, says Wadephul
In his inaugural visit to Israel, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has prioritized the return of kidnapped individuals held by Hamas, emphasizing that it's crucial for him and the German government to deal with the relatives' situation. During a meeting on Saturday, he proclaimed, "Caring for your families is my top priority."
The Hamas militants and their allies took nearly 250 lives in Israel, on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people. Today, 58 hostages are still captive, with the Islamist group responsible for the death of 34. The German government estimates that there remain a handful of hostages with ties to Germany in the Gaza Strip.
"Imagining what these Hamas detainees and their families have endured for over 19 months is almost impossible," stated Wadephul. "The hostages must finally be released."
Amidst calls for continued solidarity with Israel, Wadephul summoned horror and shame as Germany's foreign minister at the Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem. "The unconscionable horror of the Shoah was orchestrated, planned, and executed by Germans," he wrote in the memorial's guestbook. "It is our, and my enduring obligation to preserve the awareness of this immense injustice committed by Germany and actively stand against anti-Semitism."
Earlier in the day, Wadephul was shown an operational battery of Israel's Arrow 3 air defense system, which Germany intends to employ in the future. The two nations collaborate closely on military technology.
During his diplomatic conversations with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Wadephul will also discuss the challenges Israel faces in the Gaza Strip. Wadephul's meetings in Ramallah, the Palestinian territories, with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa are scheduled for the afternoon.
Wadephul's trip presents the first diplomatic test of the new black-red government with Israel, examining how clearly the German foreign minister voices criticisms of Israel’s Gaza Strip strategy. Tensions between his predecessor, Annalena Baerbock from the Greens, and Netanyahu were described as tised, as both have reportedly clashed heatedly.
A Dutch initiative focusing on adherence to the fundamental principles of the EU-Israel association agreement, which emphasize humanitarian values and respect for human rights, may also be tabled in the negotiations. Israel currently prohibits humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza, home to more than two million Palestinians, since March, justifying its actions by claiming that Hamas benefits from aid support. This Dutch initiative, set for discussion by the EU foreign ministers soon, could serve as a diplomatic buffer for Germany’s stance on the humanitarian crisis in the region.
