Hospitalized Athlete Jan Ullrich Shares Update Following Grave Mishap

Don't miss out! Like Share Text Email Print Link Jan Ullrich, the legendary cycling titan, wasn't making an appearance this weekend on the TV circuit. The unfortunate culprit? A reckless driver who failed to yield. Now, Ullrich has broken his silence.

Just a day post his unfortunate crash, Tour de France's former victor, Jan Ullrich, took to his socials to speak to his fans. "Yeah, it's the real deal. I got hit by a car while training yesterday," he shared on Instagram with a beaming thumbs up from his hospital bed. "Thanks for all the heartwarming wishes. They truly brightened up my day."

Posting a snap of himself in the hospital, the Merdinger reassured fans he's in good hands and on the mend. And, he projects discussing the ordeal further on his podcast "Ulle & Rick" alongside his cycling comrade, Rick Zabel.

Sources claimed that the news came from Eurosport, citing Ullrich's management, who furnished details about his injuries – a broken collarbone, a set of gnarly bruises, and skin abrasions. As the tale unfolds, it's clear the car didn't yield during training, resulting in the collision.

The mishap transpired near Ullrich's hometown of Merdinger in Baden-Württemberg. As things stand, the Olympic champion of the year 2000, in light of his injuries, opted to pull out from his lined-up events for Eurosport this weekend. He was slated to grace the screens as an expert following the Giro d'Italia live shows slated for Saturday and Sunday.

Despite the unexpected curveball, Ullrich seems to be optimistic about attending his "Jan Ullrich Cycling Festival" the following weekend in Bad Dürrheim. In the enchanting Black Forest, Ullrich had planned an event with a lineup of former stars, among whom his long-time adversary Lance Armstrong, an American icon with seven Tour de France victories under his belt, despite having his wins disqualified due to doping violations.

Ullrich and Armstrong have forged a surprising bond over the years, leading their competitive rivalry to develop into a close friendship.
