Hrubesch Steps Up as Interim Coach for German Women's Team
As of now, Horst Hrubesch continues in his role as the interim coach for the German women's soccer team. At 72 years old, he will also lead the side at the upcoming Nations League final tournament in February. Following their 0-0 draw against Wales in Swansea, Hrubesch hinted at his continued involvement, confidently stating, "That's the plan, I'll still be there."
The second-place finishers in the European Championships continue to harbor hope of participating in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Hrubesch initially took over in October 2023, after national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, who had been under the weather since the World Cup debacle in Australia in the summer, had her contract terminated by the German Football Association (DFB).
Following the departure of Voss-Tecklenburg, her assistant Britta Carlson took the reins temporarily. However, Hrubesch agreed to manage the remaining four group games in the Nations League, with promising results. He has yet to definitively confirm his participation in the Summer Games should the DFB squad qualify for the Olympics.
The draw for the final tournament featuring four European teams will take place on Monday. France, seeded as hosts, and another European team could capture an Olympic ticket. In their previous match against Wales, Hrubesch orchestrated a draw, maintaining his unbeaten streak in the Nations League.
