Horse Show Preview at Burghley: Arrival from Paris Full of Romance
The upcoming Burghley Horse Trials, held in Lincolnshire, is set to be a spectacle for equestrian enthusiasts as it welcomes a host of Olympic medallists and international riders.
British equestrianism had a successful Olympic Games in 2021, with a medal haul of two team golds and a bronze in dressage. Among the British contingent, Team GB's gold medal-winning eventing team will be present at Burghley. Two horses from this winning team, London 52, ridden by Laura Collett, and Lordships Graffalo with Ros Canter, were previous winners at Badminton. Notably, Lordships Graffalo, ridden by Canter, is a crowd-pleasing horse and the reigning European champion.
The Burghley Horse Trials, the second oldest of seven five-star events in the world, will also see the participation of Nicolas Touzaint, a team silver medallist from France, and two members of the team that clinched Japan's first ever championship medal. Tim Price, a Dorset-based New Zealander, and his wife, Jonelle, have four horses between them in the competition. The third horse in the winning team, JL Dublin, has been highly placed at Kentucky, the premier event in the US.
Other Olympic riders will bring their reserve horses to Burghley, creating a high-class international entry. For instance, Felix Vogg, the first Swiss Olympian to win a five-star event, will contest his first Burghley Horse Trials. Irish horseman Austin O'Connor will ride Colorado Blue, a superb jumper, at the event.
The sport of eventing, with its three phases of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping, demands trust between human and horse. It rewards kind horsemanship, courage, and partnership. With such a lineup of talented riders and their horses, the Burghley Horse Trials may showcase eventing to its best.
Kate Green, an equestrian reporter at four Olympic Games, lives in west Somerset near her favorite place, Exmoor. The Burghley Horse Trials promises to be an exciting event for both riders and spectators alike.
While the Olympics has come to a close, the world of equestrianism continues to thrive, with events like the Burghley Horse Trials offering a platform for riders to shine. The International Olympic Committee is considering swapping sports, with equestrian disciplines being a target for decades. However, for now, the focus is on the upcoming Burghley Horse Trials, where the best in the sport will come together to compete.
