Racing Preview: Notable Horses to Watch Out for at Newmarket and Ayr
The racecourses at Newmarket and Ayr are set to host a series of exciting races this week, with several horses aiming to make their mark. Here's a look at some of the key contenders:
I Still Have Faith (5.05 Newmarket)
Trained by Paul Curtis, I Still Have Faith is expected to compete in the 5.05 race at Newmarket. The horse won this race in 2023 off 2lb lower and has been gradually working his way back to his best this year. Despite a lesser soft ground effort, Curtis suggests that we can forgive him, as he is aiming for a return to form in this race.
Tryst (1.00 Newmarket)
George Boughey trains Tryst, a filly who is also set to compete at Newmarket. Tryst needed experience at Goodwood but has since worked well on the summer gallop. The filly is expected to give a good account of herself in the 1.00 race.
The Punt Nap: Nariko (2.25 Ayr)
Nariko, trained by Harry Wilson, is expected to compete in the 2.25 race at Ayr. The horse has been climbing the ranks, most recently winning the Scottish Stewards' Cup in July. Wilson believes it has been aimed at this meeting since and should cope with a 4lb rise.
The Handicappers' Nap: I Still Have Faith (5.05 Newmarket)
The Handicappers' nap, I Still Have Faith, has been improving this year and won this race in 2023 off 2lb lower. Henry Thorner, the trainer, believes that I Still Have Faith can return to winning ways on easier ground in the 5.05 race at Newmarket.
The Scottish Stewards' Cup Winner: Nariko (2.25 Ayr)
Nariko has been aiming for this meeting since its recent win in the Scottish Stewards' Cup. Far Above Dream, who has gained a second win since switching to James Owen on heavy ground at Goodwood this month, will also be a strong contender in the 2.25 race at Ayr. Despite carrying a penalty, Rob Sutton believes that Far Above Dream looks progressive and could challenge Nariko for the win.
Purosangue (3.35 Ayr)
Purosangue, trained by Craig Thake, has slipped down the handicap by 9lb since a year ago and has been clocking promising figures in good races. The horse could be a dark horse in the 3.35 race at Ayr.
