Canada's King's Plate Goes Digital: OLG and Woodbine Entertainment Group Collaborate for Online Betting

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has partnered with Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) to launch an online wagering platform, offering horse racing betting to players across Canada and beyond. This partnership comes just a few days before the 166th running of the King's Plate, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, on Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

The King's Plate, Canada's oldest continuously run horse race, first held in 1860, attracts the country's best three-year-old horses, top jockeys, and premier trainers. With a $1 million purse, the King's Plate is a high-profile event, similar to the Kentucky Derby in the U.S. This year's race will feature 13 sophomores, an overall mix of stakes winners and underdogs.

OLG's Chief Gaming Officer, Dave Pridmore, expressed excitement about offering this new experience to online players. "We are pleased to provide our digital players with an opportunity to bet on the King's Plate and other live horse races across the province," he said.

The new platform, powered by HPIbet, a leading online horse racing betting platform, uses pari-mutuel wagering, the only legal form of betting on horse racing in Canada. This collaboration provides a plug-and-play solution for other Ontario gaming operators to adopt similar systems, broadening betting access.

This initiative supports the sustainability of Ontario's horse racing industry, which employs about 23,000 full-time equivalent jobs. By modernizing access through online channels, OLG targets a younger demographic, fostering industry growth and player engagement.

OLG is the first Canadian provincial lottery and gaming agency to offer a horse racing wagering product digitally to its players. Players can now place bets on live horse races from Ontario tracks and worldwide through OLG.ca and the OLG app, including major events like The King’s Plate.

The second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the $400,000 Prince of Wales, will be run at Fort Erie on Sept. 9. The third and final leg, the $400,000 Breeders' Stakes, will be held at Woodbine on Sept. 28.

This collaboration between OLG and WEG represents an important step in OLG's mandate of supporting the sport and a vibrant, competitive, and sustainable horse racing industry in Ontario. The new digital platform emphasizes responsible gambling, integrating safety tools for users on its digital platforms.

Whether you're a serious bettor or a casual spectator, the King's Plate offers an exciting opportunity to be a part of Canada's rich horse racing tradition. With the new online betting feature, you can now enjoy the thrill of the race from the comfort of your home.
