Honoring the memory of a noteworthy guitar collector, Jim Irsay, the Indianapolis Colts present "The Win for Jim" Stratocaster, to be used throughout every game this season.
The Indianapolis Colts have made a unique and poignant tribute to their late owner, Jim Irsay, with the unveiling of a custom-built electric guitar. The team has chosen 'Win for Jim' as their affirmation for the 2025 season, a mantra that the guitar serves as a visual reminder of.
The guitar, a collaborative effort between head coach Shane Steichen and Dr. Mark French from Purdue University Guitar Lab, was built by university alumnus Noah Scott. It made its debut during week one's game, presented to long-time captain DeForest Buckner by coach Steichen.
The guitar is a new addition to the impressive collection of custom-built guitars unveiled by the Colts, which includes iconic pieces like Kurt Cobain's Smells Like Teen Spirit Fender Mustang, purchased for $4.5 million in 2022, and David Gilmour's multi-million dollar Black Strat.
Every Saturday night during a team meeting throughout the 2025 season, the guitar will be presented to a player of Shane Steichen's choice. In addition to being presented, the guitar will also be placed in the locker room, providing a constant reminder of the team's mantra.
Jim Irsay, who passed away at the age of 65 in May, was a billionaire philanthropist and a renowned vintage guitar collector. He became the youngest owner of an NFL team when he inherited the club after his father's death. Last year, he gave Guitar Lab students at Purdue University access to his guitar collection for educational purposes.
Coach Steichen stated that even though Jim Irsay is not physically with them anymore, he is always with them in spirit. The guitar, he said, serves as a symbol of Irsay's presence during games. The collection left behind by Irsay is one of the largest in the world, filled with history-soaked guitars.
A photo of the guitar was shared by Purdue University on their social media platform, showcasing its intricate design and the sentiment behind its creation. The guitar has already been featured in player walk-outs, adding an extra touch of emotion to the team's performances.
After featuring in player walk-outs, the guitar will be placed on a stand in the locker room to remind players of the season's mantra. After each presentation to a player, the guitar will return to its place in the locker room, serving as a constant reminder of the team's goal for the 2025 season: 'Win for Jim'.
