The image shows a group of people standing on top of a stage in front of a building, with two people holding cardboard boxes in their hands. There are banners with text on them, a speaker box, and other objects placed on the stage. In the background, there are trees and a cloudy sky, suggesting that the scene is taking place at the Shinto Shrine in Kyoto, Japan, where the people are gathered to witness the opening ceremony of the festival.

Honolulu Festival cancels parades and fireworks as storms disrupt 30th edition

The 30th Annual Honolulu Festival has faced major disruptions due to severe weather. Outdoor events, including the Waikiki Grand Parade and Nagaoka Fireworks Show, have been canceled. Organisers have adjusted plans while keeping some indoor activities on schedule.

The festival was set to open on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with a traditional Kagami Biraki Ceremony and a Japanese tuna cutting demonstration. Around 2,500 performers and visitors from Japan had already booked travel for the weekend's events.

Outdoor cultural performances at Waikiki Beach Walk and International Market Place were called off for Saturday. Sunday's outdoor events remain under review, depending on weather conditions. The popular Waikiki Grand Parade along Kalakaua Avenue was also canceled after a large tree fell along the route, caused by saturated ground and strong winds. The Nagaoka Fireworks Show was scrapped due to unsafe ocean and weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Honolulu Rainbow Ekiden, a team relay race and fun run/walk, has been postponed. However, indoor cultural performances and events at the Hawai'i Convention Center and Ala Moana Center will proceed as planned over the weekend.

The changes come as the festival, which has previously attracted around 150,000 residents and visitors, adapts to the weather challenges. Organisers will continue monitoring conditions for any further updates on Sunday's schedule.
