Honolulu EMS Heroes Risk Lives to Save Family in Deadly Floods

Two Honolulu EMS workers have been honoured for their bravery after rescuing a family from a flooded home in March. Will Batalon and Alexis De Costa risked their own safety during severe weather, even after losing their ambulance to rising waters. Their actions were recognised this week as part of National EMS Week celebrations.

The rescue took place in the early hours of March 20, shortly after 1 a.m. Batalon and De Costa had responded to a cancelled 911 call about a car crash on Kamehameha Highway near Chun’s Reef. While en route, their ambulance was overwhelmed by floodwaters, forcing them to abandon it.

The pair, joined by two Honolulu Police Department officers, then waded through chest-high water to reach a stranded family. Inside the flooded home, they found three adults and four young children. All seven were safely evacuated and later taken to hospital for medical checks.

During the ordeal, both Batalon and De Costa lost their personal vehicles to the flooding. Despite this, they continued their rescue efforts without hesitation. Their actions were later praised by Mayor Rick Blangiardi, who highlighted their dedication, sacrifice, and compassion.

To mark National EMS Week, Honolulu Hale will glow in orange and blue from sundown on Thursday until sunrise on Sunday. The lighting honours all EMS professionals serving across Oahu. Batalon and De Costa received commemorative plaques for their heroism during a formal ceremony. The mayor’s proclamation of National EMS Week underscores the vital role of emergency responders in the community. Their quick thinking and bravery ensured the family’s survival during a dangerous flood event.
