Honeymoon Murder in Meghalaya: Abandoned Mangalsutra Leads Police to Husband's Wife, Sonam
Why Left Behind? The Mangalsutra Mystery Unfolds
Stephen N R, Dubai
Got a whopper of a tale for ya! In a crime saga ripped straight from a Hollywood blockbuster, a humble mangalsutra – an essential Indian wedding accessory – has become the key to unlocking a chilling murder mystery.
A Mangalsutra in a Suitcase – A Clue Too Curious to Ignore
We're talking 'bout the Meghalaya honeymoon slaying case, where police accuse the newlywed wife, Sonam, of orchestrating her spouse Raja's chilling demise. The red-flag moment? You guessed it – a mangalsutra, left behind in a suitcase!
Deputy Inspector General DNR Marak shared the explosive details with NDTV. He said that during asearch of the homestay room the couple stayed in, they discovered Sonam's mangalsutra and a ring inside their suitcase. Now, why would a newlywed step away from her matrimonial bling on their honeymoon? That, my friend, was the game-changer.
A Blood-Soaked Conspiracy
According to the cops, three contract killers and Sonam's 21-year-old lover, Raj Kushwaha, made up the team behind the plot. They claim that on May 23, when the couple stayed at Nongriat village, Sonam lured Raja into a deserted spot, where the assassins lay in wait.
She led him away, pretending to snap some pics, and poof! Bad guys appear, whack him, then lug the body to Mawlakhiat and chuck it into a gorge. Yikes!
The Accused Lineup
Police have rounded up a total of five suspects:
- Sonam (24) – The prime suspect, wifey dearest
- Raj Singh Kushwaha (21) – Alleged lover boy and go-to guy
- Anand Singh Kurmi (23)
- Akash Rajput (19)
- Vishal Singh Chauhan (22)
All of 'em, except Sonam, hail from Indore and reportedly work, or have worked, with Sonam's family's furniture business where Kushwaha served as an accountant.
Custody and Probing Ahead
On Wednesday, Meghalaya's courts granted the five suspects an eight-day police custody stint. Amid tight security, the accused were transported to the District and Sessions Court in Shillong and then whisked off for medical checkups.
Police say further questioning will reveal more deets, but for now, the accused are pointing fingers at each other like a big, murderous game of "I Promise You'll Go Down, Bro!"
The Distraught Mother Speaks Out
Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, believes Sonam's family may have known about her relationship with Raj before their nuptials. She dropped a tearful confession to NDTV, saying she senses something fishy about Sonam's mom and her son's killer!
An Apology, but a Demand for Justice
Raja's family expressed their gratitude to the Meghalaya government for their support and – surprisingly – apologized for allowing Sonam to ruin the state's reputation. They also demanded strict punishment for the guilty parties.
"My Son Was Innocent!"
Ashok Raghuvanshi, Raja's father, suspected that Sonam's family may have been aware of her “mangal dosh,” a supposed curse, which he claimed drove her to plot his son's murder. He's not buying the lone-woman-kills-husband defense and demands an apology from Sonam's family.
The family wants justice, plain and simple. They're hoping the truth comes out in Meghalaya's gruesome crime saga, where a mangalsutra left in a suitcase has become the key to unraveling a murder mystery that'll make your stomach turn.
