Suhas Shetty, a notorious troublemaker and prime suspect in the high-profile Fazil murder case, was brutally murdered by a mysterious gang in Mangaluru late on Thursday night. This ambush occurred around 8:30 pm, as the attackers armed with deadly weapons besieged Shetty's vehicle. Regardless of hospital efforts to save him, Suhas succumbed to his wounds.
Karnataka's Home Minister, G Parameshwara, responded swiftly by assembling four distinct teams to track down those responsible for the murder. "A heinous crime occurred in Mangaluru last night. We've taken serious action and mobilized four separate units to trace the culprits. We're committed to maintaining the peace and tranquility across Dakshina Kannada," he shared with the press.
According to Mangaluru City's Police Commissioner, Anupam Agrawal, Shetty was traveling with four friends when they were confronted by the attackers, who arrived in a four-wheeler and a pickup truck. A brutal and vicious assault followed, targeting Shetty in particular before the assailants fled the scene.
Eyewitnesses and surveillance footage hinted at 5-6 attackers. The motive behind the senseless attack has yet to be determined, but speculations revolve around Shetty's criminal past, especially his potential involvement in the 2022 killing of Mohammed Fazil which coincided with the riots in Dakshina Kannada.
The police have put prohibition orders in place to keep tensions from escalating throughout the city. The restrictions, which began early on Friday morning, will remain in effect until May 6, 2025. Authorities plead calm as the investigation unfolds, promising to provide updates as soon as they become available.
In an effort to maintain law and order, the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, forbidding public meetings and processions. Despite this, BJP leaders, Hindu groups staged protests, while the VHP declared a citywide bandh.
