Bold and Brash: Bayern takes on Leipzig to Start Bundesliga 63

Munich, here we go again! The German football juggernaut, FC Bayern Munich, will begin the 63rd edition of the Bundesliga with an epic home battle against RB Leipzig. The match, set to kick off on August 22 at 8:30 PM, will be broadcast on Sky and Sat.1.

For Leipzig, it's their first time participating in a Bundesliga season opener. In stark contrast, Bayern, champions for the 34th time last season, are seasoned champions appearing for the 16th time since 2002. The Bavarian team has an intimidating Bundesliga record: 13 wins and three draws. In the last duel, Munich crushed Leipzig 5-1 at home in the 2024-25 season.

A day later, the DFL officially announced that Champions League participant Eintracht Frankfurt would take on Werder Bremen at home. The former North-South clash between Bayern and Bundesliga returnee, Hamburger SV, has been scheduled for the third matchday, and newly promoted 1. FC Köln will face VfB Stuttgart during carnival weekend (February 13-15, 2026).

DFL hosted the "What's the Match" riddle for fans, with mixed opinions on the riddle game.

With Summer break on the horizon

Before venturing into the latter half of the Club World Cup in the States, Munich’s squad will duel Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s strongest team at the moment, in the round of 16 in Miami. The break duration hinges on their tournament performance, but they’ll get back into action soon, playing Tottenham Hotspur in the Telekom Cup on August 7 and contending for the Franz-Beckenbauer-Supercup at VfB Stuttgart on August 16.

Sky set to dominate Friday Bundesliga broadcasts for the next four years, covering all 538 out of 617 encounters of the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga live. Sky will air Friday evening games and all Saturday Bundesliga games, including the "Top Game of the Week" at 6:30 PM.

Usual Suspects: A Rivalry Built on Past Encounters

Since their first Bundesliga encounter in 2010, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig have faced each other a total of 22 times. With 11 wins and three draws to their name, Bayern has an undeniable dominance. Leipzig, however, has managed to bag three victories. When the teams duke it out in Leipzig, things often get interesting, as the home side has managed 8 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses against Bayern on their turf. The away fixtures are slightly less in favor of Leipzig, with 5 wins, 6 draws, and 6 losses to their credit.

Over the years, both teams have proven competitive, with Bayern scoring 47 goals compared to Leipzig's 31 in total Bundesliga meetings. While recent history favors the Bavarians, the Saxons have made important home victories and drawn matches. The 2024/25 season witnessed a thrilling 3-3 draw on Matchday 32 and a 3-1 triumph for Leipzig in Munich in May 2023.

With the top-seeded teams returning for the new season, and the grand opening match scheduled in Munich, here's hoping the 2025/26 Bundesliga season will be another memorable chapter in the fierce rivalry between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig!

Following the opening match of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season, the German football powerhouse, FC Bayern Munich, will face a familiar foe in RB Leipzig. Coincidentally, the DFL has asked the Commission to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the football industry continues to evolve beyond the pitch.
