Home game presents tough challenge: Keeping Kyler Murray in check for the 49ers in their opener

The Arizona Cardinals, who started the season with a 2-0 record, their best start since 2021, are currently grappling with a struggling offense. After a solid run game performance in the past two NFL seasons, ranking fourth and seventh in total yards rushing, the Cardinals were held to just 82 yards against the Carolina Panthers, dropping them to 13th in the league.

This week, the Cardinals face a challenging opponent in the San Francisco 49ers, who are dealing with their own issues. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy is nursing a toe injury, and his status for the game remains uncertain. In the last game, Mac Jones stepped in for Purdy and delivered a impressive performance, throwing for 279 yards and three touchdowns, leading the 49ers to a win.

Kyler Murray, the dual-threat quarterback for the Cardinals, has been a thorn in the side of NFL defenses with his ability to run and extend plays. Last season, Murray matched his career high with four TD passes in the second meeting against the 49ers and erased a 10-point deficit in the first game. However, the Cardinals' offense hasn't yet fully clicked this season.

The Cardinals have also been affected by injuries at cornerback, with Garrett Williams on injured reserve and Will Johnson and Max Melton considered day to day. In their absence, Denzel Burke and Kei'Trel Clark have been holding down the fort, with Melton practicing but Johnson not present.

The 49ers, who lost both games against Murray and the Cardinals last season, have seen solid contributions from their rookies in their last game, including Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, Upton Stout, Marques Sigle, and Connor Colby. Coach Kyle Shanahan believes the rookies showed improvement in their second game.

As the Cardinals and 49ers prepare to face off, both teams will be looking to capitalise on their opponents' weaknesses. The Cardinals will aim to rediscover their potent run game, while the 49ers will hope to maintain their momentum with Jones at the helm. With both teams eager to secure a crucial early-season victory, this promises to be an exciting matchup.
