Home game against Falcons aiming to ignite sluggish offensive debut for Panthers
Atlanta Falcons Prepare for Divisional Showdown Against Carolina Panthers
The Atlanta Falcons are set to face off against their division rivals, the Carolina Panthers, this Sunday in Charlotte. The Falcons, currently standing at 1-1, will be looking to bounce back after a close loss to Tampa Bay in their Week 1 home game.
The Panthers, on the other hand, are struggling with a 0-2 record, having lost their last two games against Jacksonville and Arizona. The Falcons hold a significant advantage in their head-to-head record, with a 37-23 all-time record and a 16-14 mark in Charlotte. The teams have split games in each of the past five seasons.
One key player who will be missing for the Falcons is A.J. Terrell Jr., who is week-to-week with a hamstring injury. Raheem Morris, the Falcons' coach, has stated that a replacement is needed, but the precise defensive substitutes for Terrell have not been specified. Dee Alford filled in for Terrell in practice, but Morris has not committed to Alford's role against the Panthers.
Meanwhile, the Falcons have a number of other injuries to contend with. Darnell Mooney, Jamal Washington, Jack Nelson, Kaden Elliss, DeMarcco Hellams, and Jamal Agnew were limited in practice due to shoulder, concussion, calf, neck, hamstring, and groin injuries respectively.
The Panthers also have their fair share of injuries. Patrick Jones II, Tershawn Wharton, and Xavier Legette were held out or limited in practice due to hamstring injuries. Chandler Zavala will start at right guard for the Panthers, as Robert Hunt is also on injured reserve. Cade Mays is shifting to center to replace Austin Corbett, who is on injured reserve as well.
One player to watch for the Falcons is running back Bijan Robinson, who has already made a strong impact in his first two games. Robinson has gained a total of 167 yards on the ground and an additional 125 yards on receptions. Raheem Morris has proclaimed Robinson as "definitely the best player in football."
The Panthers will be looking to build on their 537-yard performance against the Falcons in their last meeting in January. Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons' quarterback, has stated that the team has not played their best game yet. Penix threw for 312 yards against the Panthers in last year's regular-season finale, though the Panthers won the game.
Dave Canales, the Panthers' coach, has stated that there are things Bryce Young would like to clean up from the first two games, but there are no hints that Young will be benched like last year.
The game is set to take place in Charlotte on Sunday afternoon. This game is the Panthers' divisional opener, while the Falcons have already lost their Week 1 home game to Tampa Bay. The Falcons will be hoping to turn their season around with a win against the Panthers.
