Firing Up Young Heroes: Duisburg's Expanding Children's Fire Brigades
Cross those fire hoses, kids, it's time to step up! The dynamic crew at Duisburg's Fire Department, led by Mayor Sören Link and Christian Umbach, the deputy head, alongside Jens Heinrich, the kids' fire brigade mastermind, recently unveiled a fresh batch of young recruits.
The kids' fire brigade—a spunky offshoot of the main fire department—strives to empower girls and boys aged six to twelve. Established in 2016, following North Rhine-Westphalia's law on fire protection, emergency assistance, and disaster relief, they've rapidly become an essential cornerstone of the voluntary fire service work.
At the moment, around 30 lively tyros are part of our brigades—16 of them hailing from Homberg. Having recently seized their organizational station at fire station 530 (Homberg), their bimonthly training sessions promises an exciting journey ahead.
Led by a team of expert instructors, our ricochet rookies are immersed in age-appropriate, exhilarating activities, ensuring a safe, high-quality, and responsible learning environment.
With the inauguration of this Homberg unit, Duisburg's Fire Department is extending its supportive reach for nurturing budding talents. Ideally, this first step paves the way for further leaps as they grow, from the kids' fire brigade to the youth brigade— where approximately 240 energetic teenagers actively serve in Duisburg—and eventually to the bustling ranks of the volunteer fire department.
