Hollywood icon Robert Redford, known for his independent spirit, passes away.

Robert Redford, a legendary figure in American cinema, has passed away at the age of 89 in his home in Provo, Utah. The news was confirmed to The New York Times by Cindi Berger, the CEO of public relations firm Rogers & Cowan PMK.

Redford's career spanned over half a century, during which he embodied the myth of American cinema. He was a pioneer who united glamour and civil engagement, star power, and attention to intimate and challenging stories.

In the 1970s, Redford starred in a string of films destined to become classics. These included The Sting with Paul Newman, The Way We Were with Barbra Streisand, The Three Days of the Condor, and All the President's Men, where he portrayed journalist Bob Woodward and chronicled the Watergate scandal. Among these, "The Sting" became a classic and was one of the most successful films of the 1970s, earning Redford his only Best Actor Oscar nomination. "Jeremiah Johnson" also became a classic of its genre, and "The Way We Were" remains a cult romantic drama known for the iconic pairing of Redford and Streisand.

After "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", Redford starred in several notable films, including the western "Jeremiah Johnson", the political drama "The Candidate", the romantic drama "The Way We Were", the heist film "The Sting", and the political thriller "Three Days of the Condor".

In 1969, Redford rode alongside Paul Newman in the film Butch Cassidy, which instantly cemented his status as an icon. This was followed by a series of successful films throughout the 1970s.

In 2013, Redford surprised everyone with the nearly silent film All Is Lost, in which he fought for survival alone on a boat in the middle of the ocean. This extreme work, almost a artistic testament, demonstrated Redford's ability to take risks.

Tragedy struck early in Redford's family: his eldest son Scott died in infancy, and son James passed away in 2020 at the age of 58. Redford had reduced his public appearances in recent years but remained a point of reference for colleagues and cinephiles.

Since 2009, Redford has been married to German painter Sibylle Szaggars. He is remembered not only for his beloved screen presence but also as a dreamer, stubborn and convinced that cinema could change people and the world.

Redford's passing marks the end of an era in American cinema. His legacy will live on, inspiring future generations of actors, directors, and activists.
