Hollywood icon Robert Redford, celebrities' prize-winning maestro with a gold-infused talent touch.
Robert Redford: A Legendary Career in Hollywood
Robert Redford, a screen legend from the United States, passed away on Sept. 16 at the age of 89. Known for his versatile roles and groundbreaking work, Redford leaves behind a legacy that significantly shaped the film industry.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Redford began his career in the 1960s, making his breakthrough alongside Paul Newman in the Western 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' in 1969. After various television roles, his first big screen break was in the romantic comedy 'Barefoot In The Park' (1967) opposite Jane Fonda.
Redford's work always represented the man himself: the intellectual, the artist, the cowboy. He won an Oscar for his directorial debut with 'Ordinary People' in 1980. One of his most memorable roles was in the epic romance 'Out of Africa' (1985) alongside Meryl Streep.
In 1985, Redford co-founded the Sundance Film Festival, which became a springboard for independent filmmakers. Over the years, the festival has fostered leading independent directors such as Jim Jarmusch, Tarantino, and Steven Soderbergh. Redford always saw his part in launching the independent Sundance Film Festival as one of his greatest achievements.
The greatest change in Hollywood over Redford's 60-year career was the #MeToo movement, according to Redford himself. By pursuing the indie path, he ensured his own survival in the movie business.
In his personal life, Redford married Sibylle Szaggars in 2009 in Hamburg after being together since the early 1990s. He had four children with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen, one of whom died as an infant.
Redford's career extended to the modern era, with roles in Marvel Studios' superhero blockbuster 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' (2014) and a cameo in 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019).
French producer Alain Terzian said that few careers have had such an impact on the history of cinema as Robert Redford's. His contributions to the industry, both in front of and behind the camera, will continue to be felt for years to come.
