Hollywood Box Office Struggles in November

According to data from research firm Comscore, domestic box office earnings in November are expected to hit around 553.6 million USD, marking a 12% drop compared to last year and still significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels. Despite being a reliably profitable month for Hollywood, notably during the Thanksgiving weekends, revenues are expected to come in around 400 million USD short of previous records.

Comscore estimates that Thanksgiving holiday box office earnings will reach 173 million USD, representing a slight increase from last year but still below typical pre-pandemic levels. Two highly anticipated films – Marvel's "Marvel" and Disney's "Wish" – were expected to rake in much higher earnings during the festive period, but they fell short of expectations.

Paul Dergarabedian, a leading media analyst, commented that both films, as well as "Die Tribute von Panem: Die Ballade der Schlangen" and "Trolle," rapidly gobbled up the box office competition. However, none of these films managed to live up to the outstanding events that frequent moviegoers once enjoyed over Thanksgiving weekend.

"Marvel" and Disney's superhit franchises were predicted to deliver robust earnings during the holiday season, but both "Marvel" and "Wish" failed to meet those expectations. Dergarabedian observed that the two films and others, such as "Die Tribute von Panem: Die Ballade der Schlangen," rapidly dominated the box office.

Sean Robbins, another leading analyst, suggested that the poor box office performance can be attributed to several factors, including the SAG-AFTRA strike that hindered actors from promoting upcoming films and the delayed release of the highly anticipated science fiction blockbuster "Dune: Teil 2," which was ultimately pushed back to March 2024.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," which premiered in November, failed to generate the same overwhelming response as its predecessor, with domestic earnings of 181 million USD. The film's opening weekend grossed nearly 64 million USD, but it still fell short of previous installments that generated between 110 and 76 million USD during the same period.

Robbins argued that while the November slump may put pressure on the final quarter of the year, there are potential bright spots. December's lineup features several promising releases, including "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Aquaman and the Fallen Kingdom" (which may not perform as well as the original release).

Overall, the domestic box office for 2023 currently stands at 8.26 billion USD with a modest 740 million USD deficit from the projected 9 billion USD annual revenue. Robbins emphasized the importance of upcoming films fulfilling or exceeding expectations to maintain momentum and successfully transition into 2024. With a variety of fascinating films to choose from across diverse genres, budgets, and target audiences, the cinema industry has a positive outlook for the remaining year.

Enrichment Data:

  • High budget films and low marketing rate: In 2023, many high-budget films underperformed at the box office due to high production costs and reduced marketing efforts, often referred to as "flopbusters." This trend is linked to post-pandemic Hollywood labor disputes.
  • Superhero fatigue: Audience interest in superhero-themed movies has waned, leading to reduced interest in such films – a phenomenon known as "superhero fatigue."
  • Diverse content demand: Films with diverse casts, particularly those with 31-40% BIPOC representation, show higher median global box office receipts.
  • Streaming dominance and effects: The streaming platform dominance has led to a decrease in original content production by studios and fewer theatrical releases. However, as streaming services compete for high-quality content, there is potential for increasing interest in theatrical releases and the box office.
