Jackie Chan Criticizes Hollywood's Focus on Profits over Artistry
Jackie Chan, the legendary action star in Hollywood, has expressed his concerns about the current state of the film industry during the Locarno Film Festival. In a candid conversation, Chan criticized the modern Hollywood system, stating that major studios are primarily focused on making money rather than filmmaking.
Chan believes that the quality of Hollywood films has declined due to this profit-centric approach. He criticized Hollywood businessmen for focusing on how to recoup investments rather than on making good movies, leading to a lack of creative freedom and innovation.
The 71-year-old action star contrasted this with the multifaceted artistry and craftsmanship in Asian cinema, suggesting the latter fosters higher-quality, more authentic films. He humorously noted that in all of Asia, there are only two directors capable of handling multiple roles, reflecting a more versatile and hands-on approach to filmmaking compared to Hollywood's segmented, business-driven model.
Chan mentioned Sammo Hung as the only other director in Asia who can handle all aspects of filmmaking, including writing, directing, acting, coordinating stunts, choreographing fight scenes, and editing. However, Chan claimed that he is better than Hung because he can also sing.
Chan's criticism was reported by Deadline, and he emphasized his dedication to filmmaking and his ability to handle various aspects of production, from stunt directing to acting to sound. At the Locarno Film Festival, Chan's early directorial works "Project A" and "Police Story" were in the spotlight and screened.
In recognition of his lifetime achievement, Chan was awarded the Pardo alla Carriera award at the Locarno International Film Festival. This prestigious award honours individuals who have made significant contributions to the world of cinema. Despite his criticism, Chan finds it difficult to make a good film in the current Hollywood environment.
