Holiday in Bavaria kickoff weather: Any signs of improvement on the horizon?
Heavy Rain and Storms Cause Flooding and Damage in Bavaria
The first weekend of the holidays in Bavaria, Germany, was marked by severe weather conditions, with continuous torrential rainfall and thunderstorms leading to flooding and storm damage.
The cause of this weather situation was a stationary disturbance over southern Germany, part of a "summer monsoon" pattern, where high pressure over the Mediterranean and Scandinavia brought heat, but a weather disturbance stayed almost stationary over the region, causing heavy rain and storms. The German Weather Service warned of up to 150 litres of rain per square metre, particularly concentrated over southern Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, with risks of localized flooding and high water, especially south of the Danube between the Black Forest and the Bavarian Forest.
In the Aschaffenburg district, streets were flooded, and cellars filled with water in the municipalities of Haibach and Bessenbach on Friday. The storm front passed over the Aschaffenburg city area and then moved towards the two municipalities around 6:00 PM. In Haibach, there were 35 storm-related deployments, with numerous flooded cellars, lifted gully covers, and a large tree removed from the road. In Bessenbach, there were 30 deployment sites, with water standing up to 30 centimeters deep on some roads.
Local reports also indicated severe thunderstorms with heavy rain causing landslides, including one that affected a train track, underscoring the intensity of the storms. The Bavarian Forest and south of the Danube are expected to experience heavy rain again on Sunday.
In Nuremberg, the fire department responded to approximately 100 deployments due to the weather, and the Bardentreffen music festival was temporarily interrupted due to heavy rain and storms. In the Upper and Lower Allgäu districts, three individuals were lightly injured due to heavy rain and aquaplaning incidents on the A7 and A96. Traffic on the roads in the Upper and Lower Allgäu districts ran relatively normally, and the ADAC reported no unusually large traffic jams.
The total damage from these incidents in the Upper and Lower Allgäu districts is estimated to be around 85,000 euros. There were over 65 fire department deployments in Haibach and Bessenbach due to flooding.
A rockfall was triggered by continuous rain near the Neue Traunsteiner Hut in the Berchtesgaden Alps, injuring a 37-year-old woman from Hesse who was hiking with a group. Her fingertip was severed. The water entered a hospital in Nuremberg, affecting an entire floor, but no injuries were reported.
According to the German Weather Service, temperatures will exceed 30 degrees in the second half of the week, but rain is expected before that. The weather service had forecast cloudy, rainy conditions with high humidity and significant rainfall in various parts of Bavaria such as Grafenwoehr and Passau during this period.
The German Weather Service's forecast of cloudy, rainy conditions with high humidity and significant rainfall in Bavaria led to the heavy rain and storms that caused flooding and damage. The service also warned of up to 150 litres of rain per square metre, specifically in areas like southern Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and predicted another round of heavy rain in the Bavarian Forest and south of the Danube. On the other hand, the weather service has forecasted temperatures to exceed 30 degrees in the second half of the week, reverseing the weather-forecasting pattern from rain to heat.
