Bayern Munich Falls Short in Pursuit of Florian Wirtz as Liverpool Emerges as Preferred Destination

Munich, Germany - In a significant shift, highly coveted German midfielder Florian Wirtz appears to be inclining towards a move to Liverpool FC instead of joining Bayern Munich. This decision comes as a bitter disappointment for Bayern's president Uli Hoeneß, as per comments from record German international Lothar Matthäus.

Initially, Wirtz's preference seemed to lean towards staying within the German Bundesliga, either by staying with his current team Bayer Leverkusen or moving to Bayern Munich. However, the allure of the Premier League and the ambitious transfer strategy of Liverpool FC have now swayed him towards the English club.

Bayern had earmarked Wirtz as the biggest signing in its club's history, with a prepared offer reaching up to 150 million euros. Uli Hoeneß had repeatedly expressed his desire to secure Wirtz's signature, but the rejection comes as a heavy blow, especially in light of the public anticipation that had ensued.

"For FC Bayern, this is a defeat, for Uli Hoeneß personally in recent history, this is undoubtedly the most painful loss on the transfer market," says Matthäus to BILD.

Matthäus also criticized the recent handling of transfer deals by the club management, citing the uncertain future of Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané as examples. While Bayern led the public to believe that Müller could decide his own future, a concrete contract offer never materialized. Sané, on the other hand, was publicly courted for an extension but is currently more likely to depart.

Wirtz's choice to pursue a new challenge overseas could be due to the desire for a clear, sole playmaking role which might have been difficult to secure given the presence of Jamal Musiala at Bayern. Matthäus draws a parallel to his own career, having turned down Napoli in 1986 due to the presence of Diego Maradona on the ten position there.

The fact that Liverpool is willing to break their own transfer record to secure Wirtz and potential discussions about a package deal with Leverkusen for Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong could further tip the balance in favour of the Merseyside club.
