Toni Kroos' Return to Germany's Squad: Criticism Abounds

The Definitive Midfield Conundrum

Germany's national soccer team has been a topic of discussion recently, with speculation swirling around Toni Kroos' potential return to the squad. However, two former national team players, Lothar Matthäus and Markus Babbel, are far from enthused about the idea. These respected figures question whether Kroos will add value to Germany's already stacked midfield or simply stir up unnecessary turmoil.

Matthäus: Opening a Can of Worms

Matthäus, a 1990 world champion, considers Germany's midfield to be the least in need of reinforcements, given the presence of Ilkay Gündoğan, Jamal Musiala, and Thomas Müller in attacking midfield. He goes on to warn about the uproar that would follow if Kroos were to be reintroduced as the holding six, stating that Kroos is not a clearer in front of the defense.

Babbel: The Need for a Six who Can Tackle

Similarly, Markus Babbel, a 1996 European champion, shares Matthäus' concerns. Battle-hardened in the midfield, Babbel sees a role for Kroos as 'a gifted footballer' but is hesitant to label him as the savior. Instead, he emphasizes that midfielders need to demonstrate their mettle with relentless tackling and grit.

Hoeneß: A Titanic Signal

Bayern Munich's honorary president, Uli Hoeneß, has never shied away from expressing his thoughts, and this time, he doesn't hold back either. He candidly describes a Kroos comeback as a 'Titanic signal,' suggesting that the real-world may not be quite ready for his return to the German team. Hoeneß recognizes Kroos as an 'outstanding footballer,' but he doubts that he can single-handedly rescue German soccer.

Hoeneß' past criticisms against Kroos are worth revisiting, with his commentary on "Sport1's Doppelpass" program in 2021. He indicated that Kroos' style of play was 'totally over' after Garcia's exit and the ensuing European Championship exit.

Nagelsmann's Interesting Thought

Germany's coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has remained closely guarded about his thoughts on the Kroos comeback. He has averted any direct responses to the topic, indicating that assessing all players with a German passport is part of his job. Despite this, Nagelsmann has yet to discuss the matter with Kroos or have any official plans for the Real Madrid midfielder's inclusion in the national team.

According to Bild, Kroos himself might consider a return to the German team for the 2024 European Championships, held in his home country.
