Ice Hockey World Championship: Ottawa Sensation Stützle Joins the Fray; DEB Gets a Boost Before the Tourney Kicks Off

Hey there, sports fans! The Ice Hockey World Championship is about to get a hell of a lot more interesting: Germany score the prized NHL reinforcement for the big event in the form of forward phenom Tim Stützle. On Friday, his team, the Ottawa Senators, gave the green light. The wait is finally over before Germany's first game against longshots Hungary on Saturday (4:20 PM/ProSieven and MagentaSport).

"We're totally stoked to have a player of Tim Stützle's caliber on our squad," said national coach Harold Kreis. "He's proved his worth in the NHL season just gone."

Stützle to touch down in Denmark this weekend

The 23-year-old will still be sitting this one out for Germany's games against Hungary and Kazakhstan. Stützle is expected to arrive in Denmark this weekend. A debut is expected either against Norway on Tuesday or against Switzerland two days later.

For the vice-world champions of 2023, a win against Hungary and Kazakhstan on the following day is a must, even without Stützle. The same goes for the game against Norway, with three points earmarked as the minimum requirement to secure a place in the quarterfinals. "If we don't win these games, it'll be a bloody hard road to the quarterfinals," captain Moritz Seider warned bluntly.

Two juggernauts join forces at the World Championship

In addition to the Detroit Red Wings defender, the German national team's attack will benefit from the presence of world-class player Stützle. Despite the Ottawa Senators bowing out of the NHL playoffs last week, Stützle's release came on the cusp of the World Championship's first game on Friday evening. The 23-year-old Stützle was recently nursing an injury and needs to be 100% fit to take to the ice. This will be his second World Championship appearance, following an injury in 2022.

With his class, Stützle will elevate the DEB selection to a whole new level. However, the absence of JJ Peterka, who declined due to forthcoming contract negotiations with the Buffalo Sabres, has left the attack short on quality against top opponents. Additionally, Nico Sturm is still battling it out in the NHL playoffs, and injured Moritz Müller (Cologne Sharks) and Kai Wissmann (Berlin) will be sorely missed on defense and in the locker room. "Regardless, we've got a solid crew," said national coach Kreis, now entering his third World Championship as coach of the German national team.

Three games we've got to win

After the game against Hungary, Kazakhstan and Norway await Germany. Even without further NHL reinforcements, Kreis' team ranking highly in these games. "It ain't bothering me none," said Seider, who demands healthy self-confidence ahead of Saturday's game: "We don't need to slink away and play like a bunch of meek mice. We've got to strut our stuff with our chests out. But we still gotta give every opponent the respect they deserve."

Last year, the German team demonstrated their worth against Latvia (8:1), Kazakhstan (8:2), Poland (4:2) and France (6:3) in Ostrava, Czech Republic. However, if the three mandatory victories in Herning don't materialize, the pressure will increase significantly before the games against the top nations. Against Switzerland, the USA, and the defending champions, Germany is by no means a pushover, but three victories may be a stretch.

"The pressure's always present," emphasized Seider, who also noticed a development within the DEB team after Germany's 2:5 defeat in the World Cup warm-up game last Sunday against the USA. "We've made progress," said the NHL defender.

First things first: collect points

Veteran Patrick Hager from Munich spoke up: "We can't afford to analyze the game plan now. We've seen in the past that if we play a perfect game, we can topple any opponent. That's the challenge for the entire tournament. First, we gotta get some points under our belts."

The final group game against hosts Denmark could be a deciding factor in snagging a spot in the quarter-finals. At the previous World Cup in Herning seven years ago, Denmark scored a surprise 3:2 win over Germany despite having Leon Draisaitl in their lineup. The quarter-finals were missed in 2018, but Germany managed to secure a spot in the round of the best eight five years in a row.
