Pakistan's Pro League Participation Hangs in the Balance

Pakistan's hockey team is one step closer to securing a place in the prestigious FIH Pro League, but the decision rests with the government. The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has requested an extension of the deadline for confirming participation in the upcoming Pro League, from August 12 to August 20.

The PHF's president, Tariq Hussain Bugti, confirmed that the estimated expense for the Pro League season alone is around Rs350 million, within an overall annual requirement of Rs700 to Rs750 million for operations. The federation has formally submitted this financial request to the government while also working on engaging private sponsors.

The PHF's pursuit of Pro League participation comes after an invitation from the FIH, following New Zealand's withdrawal due to financial constraints. Pakistan had made a strong showing in the 2024-25 Nations Cup, finishing as runners-up, making them eligible to fill New Zealand's spot.

The extension of the deadline was granted due to the PHF's ongoing discussions with the government regarding funding. The federation's president has expressed concerns about security issues, particularly in light of threats reported in Indian media. A delegation may visit India to assess the ground realities before making a final decision.

The Pro League is one of the international events for which the PHF requires funding for the year. The government will also decide whether Pakistan will send its team to India for the upcoming Asia Cup.

Several former Olympians have backed Pakistan's participation in the Pro League, calling it crucial for the sport's revival in the country. Despite financial constraints, the PHF president has dismissed reports of differences within the federation and noted that Pakistan continues to compete and reach the finals of international events.

Bugti has also shared that funds have started to be transferred directly to players' accounts, with local daily allowances being disbursed in the first phase. The PHF has submitted a budget proposal of Rs350 million specifically for the Pro League.

The Pro League, organized by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), is one of the most prestigious international hockey events, featuring top-tier teams from around the world. Participation in the Pro League would provide Pakistan's players with vital international exposure and potentially improve the national team's ranking.

While no confirmed information has been found regarding an impending India tour linked directly to the Pro League participation, participation in the Pro League would naturally involve international fixtures, possibly including matches against India since both teams are in the competition.

As the deadline for confirmation of participation approaches, the hockey community in Pakistan awaits the government's decision with bated breath. The Pro League presents a significant opportunity for Pakistan's hockey team to compete on the international stage and boost the sport's profile in the country.

  1. To ensure Pakistan's hockey team can fully participate in the prestigious FIH Pro League, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has submitted a financial request of Rs350 million to the government, with the Pro League being one of the international events for which they require funding.
  2. Besides the financial aspect, the PHF is also dealing with security concerns, as a delegation may visit India to assess the ground realities before making a final decision on Pakistan's Pro League participation and potential Asia Cup tour, both of which would naturally involve international fixtures, possibly including matches against India.
