Hochul's past critic, Torres, retracts his negative views
In a surprising turn of events, Congressman Ritchie Torres, who had previously criticized Governor Kathy Hochul, has endorsed her for reelection as Governor of New York. The endorsement, made on August 18, 2025, marks a significant shift in Torres' relationship with Hochul.
Torres, a representative from the Bronx, praised Hochul's record, urging New Yorkers to "judge the governor by her record." He highlighted her efforts in delivering for his constituency, a place he has called home his whole life. This endorsement came amidst speculation that Torres might run for governor himself, a claim he has since denied.
The shift in Torres' stance towards Hochul seems to be driven by their shared opposition to federal policy threats, particularly cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs, which Torres claims would harm millions of people, including many in New York and the Bronx.
Earlier remarks from Torres may have suggested reservations or independent political ambitions. However, his recent statements emphasize alignment with Hochul's record and positions, especially on protecting healthcare and social safety nets.
Torres' endorsement comes after a period of criticism directed at Hochul regarding her restructuring of the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program. Yet, in his endorsement speech, Torres drew a distinction between containing the cost of a program and gutting it by a trillion dollars, a reference to the restructuring of home care in the state.
Torres' change of heart regarding Hochul seems to be rooted in recognizing her effectiveness at standing up to former President Donald Trump. He has also praised Hochul for her willingness and ability to hold Trump accountable for his betrayal of working families.
This endorsement by Torres is a significant development in the New York political landscape, particularly as Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado and Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani vie for the mayoral position in New York City. It remains to be seen how this endorsement will impact Hochul's reelection campaign.
